This Week’s Fitness and Healthy Eats

Hey Everyone!  This week was all about fitness and healthy food (except for some of Jeremy’s delicious birthday cake).  I was pretty much a creature of habit this week and ate almost every meal on repeat.  I also got in all of my scheduled workouts this week.  I felt like this week was a success! 

I want to share with all of you about why I’m eating the things that I am.  I usually do eat pretty healthy, but after losing my sister, having surgery, and then not being able to work out for several months, I quit worrying about it, at least through the holidays.  I just didn’t really care what I ate., I didn’t really have that much of an appetite.  But, the things that I did eat were just junk.  I’ve always been a stress eater and eat for comfort…which I know is ridiculous.  From September to the end of December I ended up gaining 9 pounds.  I went to see a cardiologist at the end of December.  It was just a precaution because my sister died from congestive heart failure, and I had a half brother, who was just a few years older than me, that passed a couple of years ago from a heart attack.  Heart disease runs very strongly in my family so I just wanted to make sure I was okay, and if not make sure I was doing everything that I could to combat it. 

All the tests done in the office were normal, and I am actually going in a couple of weeks to get a heart scan to check my arteries.  The doctor is pretty confident that it won’t show anything.  However, my blood work showed a couple of things that were a little off.  He said it wasn’t anything to worry about right now and he’s going to check me again in April.  (But I do worry.)  The good news was that he said I showed no signs of heart disease.  He said overall I am very healthy.  His recommendation for me until the next blood test was to cut back on sugar, sodium, dairy, and eat a more plant based diet.   That gave me the kick in the butt to get my eating and exercise back on track.  Since the beginning of January, I have really been watching my sugar and sodium intake.  I have been doing really well with it and have lost 6 of the pounds that I gained.  I did have a small piece of Jeremy’s birthday cake this week, and the very next day I woke up with my face broken out!  That was not worth it!

Let’s get to my food and workouts.  Monday started off with some Spark and a protein bar.  Lunch was the same as last week – ground turkey, steamed green beans, and sautéed zucchini.

I did a BBG full body workout today.  It was tough.  But, I love those workouts because I feel like I have done something afterwards.

Dinner tonight was a quesadilla.   I made these Sunday night for us to eat during the Super Bowl.  I really liked it, so I had it again tonight.  Mine had chicken, black beans, green chilis, onion, and one slice of Sargento thin Colby jack cheese and it’s all stuffed inside a corn tortilla.  Monday night was all about the Bachelor.  I’m so glad that Crystal went home.  She got on my nerves, so much that I just cringed listening to her talk. 

Tuesday morning started the same as Monday.  It was cold all day and I could not get warm!  That afternoon it started sleeting and my boss sent everyone home early.  It wasn’t that bad, but it was supposed to get worse.  I went straight home and did the BBG lower body workout and then another lower body circuit that I found on Pinterest.  After that I soaked in an Epson bath!

Jeremy had games about 45 minutes away.  He called before he left at 5 and the coach said they were still on.  At 6:20 (10 minutes before game time), they cancelled the games because some of the visiting fans had slid off the road on the way.  Jeremy headed back home and when he got there, he said the roads were getting really bad.  I was so glad he made it home safely!

We had quesadillas for dinner again.  I didn’t put any chicken on mine this time.

I was still a little hungry after dinner, and I kind of wanted something sweet.  I decided to use up some of the fruit that I had.   I baked a pear for my dessert.  I cut it in half, sprayed each half with a couple squirts of butter, sprinkled with cinnamon, and added a drizzle of honey.  It was delicious and exactly what I needed!  

Later, I set my alarm for 5 am and was planning on going to bed early then getting up early and working out before work on Wednesday.  Around 11 Tuesday night I got a call that work was closed Wednesday due to the weather.  I was soooo happy and immediately turned my alarm off!

I took advantage of sleeping in on Wednesday.  That was partly due to the fact that I didn’t sleep much because I was so sore and couldn’t get comfortable.  When I finally rolled out of bed (literally), it was around 10.  On Instagram Tuesday I captioned my picture “sore today, strong tomorrow”.  I think it should have said “strong today, sore tomorrow”!  My lower back and legs hurt!  I finished my workout strong, and then I couldn’t move on Wednesday! 

The weather turned out beautiful, and I really enjoyed having a day off when it wasn’t icy or cold.  My aunt was in town from Houston so I went to my grandparents to visit for a few hours.  My aunt and I shared a salad for lunch.  It had shredded lettuce, turkey, olives, tomatoes, and mozzarella cheese with a balsamic vinaigrette.  Okay so mine was just lettuce and turkey. 

Later, when I got home, for just a quick minute I thought about going for a run because the weather was so nice.  I even got dressed and put on my running shoes.  But, trying to bend over and tie them reminded me how much I still hurt so I decided to make it a rest day.

I got busy baking a birthday cake for Jeremy’s party with my family Thursday night.  I made him a really good chocolate cake from scratch a couple of years ago.  But, I couldn’t find the recipe that I used, so I found another one on Pinterest.  WORST RECIPE EVER!!!!  That cake was an epic fail!  It was definitely moist as the recipe claimed it would be.  Going into the oven, it was pure liquid.  When it I pulled it out, it was done, but it was too moist to even stay together.  It was almost like a lava cake.  I tried to piece it back together and thought I could cover it with icing and it wouldn’t show.  LOL I was wrong.  Spreading the icing just made the cake fall apart even more and it ended up collapsing.  It was like chocolate pudding.  We had to toss it.  Not only did it look bad, but it tasted like extremely dark chocolate, which was not what I was going for.  I definitely won’t use that recipe again.

I ended up pulling out the good old box mix and whipped up another one.  Luckily, Jeremy’s not picky as long as it’s chocolate.

For dinner tonight, Jeremy wanted barbeque.  I had some smoked chicken and couple bites of the hot link.  It has a really good flavor, but it lights you up after you swallow it!!

It was 9:45 before I finally sat down and I was asleep within 20 minutes. 

Thursday morning I decided to try a different breakfast.  I had two pieces of toast topped with PB2, chia seeds, and flax seeds and Spark

After work I got in a run.  The weather was gorgeous!  It was almost 60 degrees so I had to be outside!  I ran two and half miles with my new New Balance insoles.  I’m not sure how I feel about them yet.  They are not comfortable at all to walk in, but running was a little more comfortable.  I have thirty days to try them out, so we’ll see. 

After my run, I walked Jake for another half mile.  I’m still going slow, and am only able to make it between 2 – 2 ½ miles before I have pain.  I’m hoping to get that up to three soon, but I don’t want to over do it because then I can’t hardly walk on my foot for a few days.  After my run, I did a quick ab circuit and then showered off.  Jeremy and I headed over to my grandparents to have a little party with my family for Jeremy’s birthday.

Later that evening, we fixed more quesadillas for dinner.  I added some mashed avocado to mine this time.

Then it was TV time!

Friday’s breakfast was the same as Thursday.  I really liked it and it kept me full all morning.  Jeremy had games Friday night and I opted to stay home.  Before my run, I had some Spark and tried this Oat bar.  It was really good, and I’ll probably order some more.  It kind of tasted like no bake cookies.

I ran 2 miles because it was 63 degrees, took Jake for a long walk, and then did a BBG abs and arms workout. 

Jake and I spent the evening watching TV and playing with his toys.  My dinner was another quesadilla. 

Saturday morning when I woke up I was freezing!  Jake had curled himself up in our bed trying to get warm.  (In between us in the “H” position as one of our friends calls it.  LOL)  A cold front came through overnight and it was around 14 degrees!  I ran and turned the heater up and snuggled back in with Jake to get warm.  When we finally did get up, I fixed myself some Spark and PB2 and flax seed toast.  I headed over to my parents to use the elliptical. 

Then I went home to get ready to go with Jeremy to his games.  Since it’s playoffs, he’s assigned a different partner for each week of playoffs.  His partner this week is a super nice man.  He’s a milk man and listening to him talk about it made me laugh.  He reminded me of Bubba on Forest Gump.  He is a slow talker, and then when he started listing what he delivers I had a hard time holding in my laugh.  He said he delivers, “gallons, half gallons, quarts, pints, crates, boxes, cottage cheese, cheese, yogurts *long pause* juices, Red Diamond teas”.  Then he went on to tell where he delivers it to.  “All the restaurants, convenient stores, grocery stores, all stores, schools, prisons, hospitals.”  I was in the back seat trying not to laugh out loud.

The girls game tonight was a pretty good one.  The best I’ve seen all year.   The home team was kicking it old school and ran in to Ice Ice Baby.  They made the other team wait until the entire song played before they could run in.  The girl’s game got pretty ugly.  Jeremy definitely earned his pay tonight!

When we got back after the games it was late and I wasn’t that hungry.  Neither of us wanted to cook anything so we ran through Taco Mayo.  I really like their Fresh Mex menu.  I ordered a Cilantro Little Big Bowl.  It had cilantro lime rice, black beans, chicken, pico, salsa, guac, and a sprinkle of cheese.  I couldn’t even eat half of it.

We stayed up watching TV until almost 1 am. 

Sunday morning I was up at daylight.  I was having a hard time sleeping.  I read a book in hopes that it would help me to go back to sleep but it didn’t.  So, I finally got up and had some toast while I waited on Jeremy to get up.  When he did, we went grocery shopping and I meal prepped for this week.  (I’ll have a post up on Wednesday about my meal prep this week.)  Today is a rest day and I’m enjoying it!  I’m about to go visit my family for a little while and then come home and play with Jake.

    This week I have finally decided to start recording what I eat since I need to get back on track too! Sorry your cake was a flop but good thing you had a box cake on hand. We got a new oven a few months ago and it’s been hard to get use too. A lot of things I’ve made have been “flops” lately. And I know it’s the oven, cus they’ve been tried and true recipes i’ve made before!

      I’ve tried to blame my oven before, but my husband didn’t believe me. LOL I’ve been using My Fitness Pal to track all of my food. I do so much better when I track it.

    Heart disease is so scary, and it’s everywhere. I’m glad you’re taking precautions and doing what you can to stay ahead of the battle.

    I haven’t had a kitchen flop in a while, but I do stress when I’m trying something new. I don’t usually have a backup plan, so I’m always hoping what I’m trying will work out. Otherwise I’d call the pizza place up the street for delivery.

      I always stress when trying something new. I love that you can call the pizza place. We aren’t too far out of town, so we can run pick up something if I mess up dinner.

    Jeremy looks quite pleased with the box cake so I say that was definitely a win! Thanks for sharing such personal reasons behind your healthy eating. I am glad in terms of your heart, your doc seems pleased and with your eating/ fitness regime it can only go from strength to strength. So well done on a great week. I am just not eating what I should be so I really have to kick my butt into gear in terms of that. So like you I will have to start planning better!

    Heart disease is very scary. I am so sorry you also lost your half brother to a heart attack. I can imagine that this put you on full alert and I think it’s great to get your health checked regularly!
