A Solid 13 Mile Run & The Rest of My Week

Happy Easter Everyone!  I hope you all have had a great weekend and hopefully got to celebrate Easter with some family, friends, and good food!  I had a great run this week and after the last couple of weeks of being down with foot pain it was just what I needed!  Before we get to my run, let’s start with last Monday.

Lunch everyday this week was a chicken fajita bowl

Monday

After work I headed out for a run.  I ran 4 miles with just a little bit of discomfort in my left foot.

The weather was absolutely beautiful and after my run I took Jake for walk.  All the flowers were beautiful!

By the time we got home, my foot was hurting pretty bad so I put on my compression socks and iced it.  That helped a lot! Later that evening, I tried out a new charcoal mask.  It was awesome!  It smelled like a spa and it definitely got all the toxins out of my pores.  My face felt so soft afterwards.

Dinner tonight was just a turkey and swiss sandwich with some rice cake chips.

Tuesday

Since my foot was still sore, I decided to take a day off from running.  I took Jake for a walk and then did a full body circuit and ab workout.

He’s watching a bird.

I did a Fit Affinity circuit and then I followed it with some abs from @lafitara on Instagram.  She posts some awesome workouts!  If you don’t follow her, you should!

Jeremy was gone umpiring, so I used tonight to work on some new posts!  I know I have totally slacked off the last couple of months on getting posts out.  But, I’ve got several in the works and am going to do better!  Since I was on my own for dinner, I fixed my favorite – scrambled eggs (1 yolk + 2 whites), turkey sausage, and toast.

When Jeremy came home, we watched Sweet Home Oklahoma.  This is a new show on Bravo and it’s supposed to be kind of like a real housewives show.  I am still baffled at how these women got on this show.  They live about an hour and half from me, so we have kind of gotten into watching it, and it’s starting to grow on me.  They do say some really funny things, but they are very distasteful, so I will not repeat them!

When it was over, I went to bed because I knew I had a long day on Wednesday!

Wednesday

Today was the longest day at work, and it was draining!  I could not wait for it to end so I could go run.  Before I left I had some Spark and headed to a hill nearby to run.  I ran up and down the hill for 25 minutes and then jogged a mile after.  The wind was at my back going up the hill, so it felt really good blowing in my face on the way down!

Between the hill and the jog, I went and ran up the stairs at our amphitheater.

That was tough!

When I got home I did some major foam rolling so I wouldn’t be sore the next day!
Jeremy was home tonight and I fixed chicken fajitas for dinner.  (I am on a fajita kick this week!)

We spent the evening playing with Jake and watching tv.  The best kind of night!

Thursday

Even though I foam rolled Wednesday, I was still pretty sore today.  So, I foam rolled again!  I also spent a lot of time stretching!  Later in the afternoon, Jake and I went over to my father-in-law’s to work on our garden.

We’re getting it ready to start planting, so I had to rake grass out of it.  It took almost 2 hours and my shoulders definitely got a workout!

When Jeremy got home, we sat on the back porch with Jake and Max until almost dark.  When we finally went in, I fixed us breakfast for dinner.

Friday

I was off work today, so I enjoyed sleeping in a little (or a lot).  I also spent some time binge watching 13 Reasons Why.  This show is pretty good so far.

When I got up, I took Jake for a walk.  He loves smelling the flowers.  (He usually pees on them afterwards.)

Then I went to get some groceries.  I have to say that I really, really, really dislike Wal-Mart.  Or, it could just be the rude people shopping. There was a million people in there, which makes it so difficult to get up and down the aisles.  By the time I got to the chip aisle, I had no patience left.  The chip aisle is the worst! (It has my water and tea on it.)  It’s smaller than the other aisles and it is impossible to get down.  I seriously stood for several minutes waiting on this woman (crouched next to her basket) to move her basket so I could get down the aisle.  I don’t know how many times I said excuse me, or how many times the girl next to me did, but this woman ignored us both.  You can also see the people behind her waiting on her to move too!

After that, I was trying to check out – I’m standing in line at the self-checkouts, and a man pushes his basket right in front of me and jumps on the next open machine.  Seriously!?!  I let people go in front of me all the time if they just a have a couple of things.  But, don’t just do it!  I have zero patience for rude people!

When I got home, I took Jake on another walk and then I worked on getting my house clean.  Jeremy was umpiring a tournament this weekend and one of the other umpires drove a couple of hours here to help him, so he was staying the night with us.

And, I lied to you – I said we wouldn’t be eating at Rib Crib any time soon, and we did tonight.  It’s where our guest wanted to eat.  It actually was really good and the service was much better.  And, there were no random hairs in our chips! Since I was planning on a long run with my dad Saturday morning, I had smoked chicken and a side salad.

I wanted to make sure that I ate something that would settle and not make my stomach upset during my run.

After dinner, we went home and I went straight to bed.  It was around 11 when I went to bed.  The guys stayed up talking and I was still awake at 2:30 when Jeremy came to bed.  I just dozed off an on all night long but I never could actually go to sleep.

Saturday

I had my alarm set for 5:30, but I was wide awake at 5, so I went ahead and got up.  I had some Spark and eggs, toast, and a banana and watched another episode of 13 Reasons Why while I waited on the food to settle.  I was really nervous about this run because I hadn’t had any sleep so I figured it would be rough because I would be super tired.

I headed over to my parents house around 6:30 and my dad and I hit the road at 6:45.  We ran a totally new route and I absolutely loved it!  But, it isn’t safe for me to run alone.  🙁  (We actually passed three other runners going towards town as we were heading out, so we weren’t the only crazy ones running that route.)

We ran on the highway, and since it was so early there wasn’t much traffic.  We ran 6.5 miles out and then turned around and came back.  With the exception of a couple of “rolling” hills, it was pretty flat.

8

I felt great and had a ton of energy!  It wasn’t until about mile 11 that I started feeling a little tired.  I had a GU with me, but ever since last year’s training I just can’t stomach them.  I was going to try today, but just the thought of it made my stomach turn.

Running out, the wind was in our face, but it wasn’t too strong.  It was overcast and cool.  Coming back, the wind was behind us, but it seemed to have died down a little. It got pretty humid, and I was wishing for some light rain to cool us off!

I really liked running on the highway because there was different scenery and it was a route that I didn’t know.  Do you ever run a route over and over that you just get so sick of it?  I start dreading the next turn because I know where it will take me and how far it will be before I’m done.  I decided to not even look at my watch. (I made this decision in the first mile.  After a half of a mile my pace went down to 3:25 and stayed there the entire rest of the run.  I’m not sure why, but it really annoyed me.) I just took in all the new scenery and I had a fun time looking at all the stuff on the side of the road.  You wouldn’t believe the things that people throw out.  There were tons of bottles, cans, trash, a few needles…I even found a brand new camo ratchet strap that I actually picked up and brought home to Jeremy!  At one point on our way back to town, there was a ton of underwear and socks strewn down the side of the road, which was really strange!  I also saw an adult potty chair in a box.  Looking at everything helped the time to pass quicker.

Once we got back, I came home and iced my feet.  They did much better today!  I even wore my new shoes.  I re-laced them and took my insoles out and put them back in so hopefully it was just something wrong with the laces that caused all the pain.  I didn’t have any pain today, but when I got home they were a little swollen and my left one was a little sore, so that’s why I iced them.  But, everything seems to swell when I run – my face, my fingers, my feet and ankles…it’s weird.  My wedding ring is usually so loose that it could slide off my finger.  When I run, my finger swells up around it and it’s not moving!

Jeremy was umpiring a tournament, and he rode with the guy that stayed with us, so I went to pick him up.  We watched a few innings of the final game, and then headed home.  I love spring baseball! The weather is beautiful!

My feet are so swollen and this was a couple hours after my run!

Later in the evening, we went to dinner.  Mexican…again! We’re pretty predictable.  But, we really don’t have that many choices.  I had the fajita chicken plate.  It was supposed to have the cheese on the side, and the waitress brought us the cheese on the side in a bowl.  But, it also had cheese all over the rice too.  They were super busy and we had waited a while for the food, so I just picked the chicken out and ate it.  It was plenty though, I was full!

After dinner we stopped and got a donut.  I can’t even tell you the last time I’ve had one of those!  I had a chocolate glazed one and it was heavenly!  🙂

Sunday

Today has been a typical Sunday.  It’s been raining off and on, so we’re just hanging around the house.  As I’m writing this, I have my left foot propped up with ice on it.  I almost fell in the floor when I went to get out of bed today.  The pain in my foot is pretty bad today.  But, it’s not just on the top, it’s all down the side too.  I am hoping that I can make it until the race and then have it checked out.  It actually doesn’t hurt as bad when I have on compression socks and my running shoes.  I may be wearing them to work all week!

I am about to do some meal prepping, and then I’m going to do a Fit Affinity circuit and an ab workout from @lafitara, and then I’ve got some writing to do, and 13 Reasons Why to finish.

We have some steaks marinating for dinner tonight and I can’t wait!

I hope you all have a great week!!

I binge watched 13 reasons why all weekend and just finished it. It was sad and sweet and very thoughtful all at the same time. I couldn’t stop watching!

It was heartbreaking to watch and a real eye opener. I couldn’t stop watching it either. I finished it last night! I would love to see a second season.

LOL You do love your stairs! I made it up them twice and was done. I guess I need to do them more often so they aren’t so hard!

It was very well done! I haven’t read the book. I don’t think I could now after watching it. And, thanks! I love Mexican food!

I never use a clay mask. I probably should. I could stand to eliminate some toxins from my face. My lab is always curious at birds too and squirrels.

I am not big on masks, but my mom gave it to me to try and I’m glad I did! I love it! Jake will just watch them, he never chases them. It’s really funny. We have rabbits in our back yard and he’ll just lay on the porch and watch them. I always think he’s supposed to be a hunting dog. LOL

Ooh the steak looks really good! I’ve enjoyed running in my neighborhood and seeing so many beautiful flowers! Nice job on your long run!

Thank you! I love this time of year when everything is in bloom. It’s all so pretty!

I love irises and those are so colorful! I only have purple and yellow. Don’t even get me started about Walmart. I only go when I absolutely have to. I hope you find an answer to your foot pain soon. I know it is no fun to deal with. Running a new route sounds nice, especially since you could spend time with your Dad too. Thanks for linking, Tara!

I love admiring all the flowers in the neighborhood because my flower beds are pretty sad. LOL I am not much of a gardener. I go to Wal-Mart once a week, but we usually go late one night on the weekend so it isn’t busy. I can’t stand to go in the middle of the day! My foot is starting to really make me mad. It’s just frustrating when your body doesn’t cooperate with you! Thanks for hosting!

Great job on your long run! The new route is motivating me to go beyond my new street and get out in the neighborhood.

Thank you! I loved the route and it was so nice to get out of my normal routine. Go explore! LOL It really did help the time to go by quicker.

I am currently binge watching 13 Reasons Why. It’s actually pretty good. I had some similar bullying incidents happen to me in middle school so I feel sorry for Hannah.

5 am wake up calls kill me. It just leaves me exhausted for the rest of the day. I need to get used to that soon because I’ll be starting marathon training soon!

I’m sorry that happened to you. I feel sorry for Hannah too. It’s so heartbreaking to think about how kids / people treat each other. You just never know what is going on in someone’s life or how they are feeling. I hate 5 am wake ups. I am not a morning person so any kind of work out or run in the morning is tough. But, I do like getting it over with for the day. Good luck on your upcoming training and race!

I have been so excited for your half marathon!! Almost more excited for you than for myself, haha! Are you running with a goal time in mind? PS we eat almost exactly alike. LOL

I’m excited to run it too! I was going for a sub 2 hours time, but now with my foot I’ll just be happy to finish it. So we’ll see….did you decide to run it?!! We’ll have to meet up! I’m glad someone else eats like me! LOL everyone I know thinks I eat “gross” food!

Congrats on your 13 Miler despite the foot pain! I can totally understand that you enjoyed running on the highway – it can get really tiring running the same route over and over again. Sometimes we have no other choice but it’s nice to see a new scenery.
Charcoal masks rock! They are so purifying and your skin feels so fresh and clean afterwards! Love them!
Have another great training week Tara!

Thank you! I love running new places and try to find different neighborhoods to run in around town. But, even with that it still gets boring sometimes, so the highway was fun! I loved the mask!! I’m definitely getting some more.

  12. Tricia Vaughn Reply

Seeing your charcoal mask reminds me I have on to try. I get this makeup subscription that I really need to cancel since I only can use about 1 out of the 5 items each month. I’m just not too much into bright blue eye shadow and bold black eyeliner I have more of that stuff than I truly can use. I’m a brown kind of girl. So I do need to get these masks out and try them!

13 Reasons really hit a chord with me because I see my fourth grade students treating each other similarly. Fourth grade! It is really encouraging me to push kindness and show kindness daily. I don’t want any of them to go through what Hannah did.

Sorry about your foot pain. I hope it sorts itself out!

      Tara Reply

That’s crazy in fourth grade! They’re supposed to still be too young for that! I think it’s so tough for kids to understand how they’re actions really affect others. I hope they embrace the kindness!
