One Mile At A Time

Hi Friends!  Thanks for stopping by my weekly recap to see how my half marathon training is going.  This is kind of a long recap because I added in my weekend too.  I just completed week 3 and even though it didn’t go completely as planned, I’m feeling pretty good about it!  I lied last week when I said that fall was here.  It came for a couple of days and then went away.  The temperature was back up in the 90’s at the beginning of this week and it was humid!  But, I pushed through and got some workouts in.

Monday – Today was a cross training day.  I had 40 minutes scheduled and I had planned on riding my bike, but I had a flat tire and no way to air it up.  So, I did a 30 minute workout and then also took Jake on two long walks.  We waited until it cooled down in the evening to go on the walks.

I talked to my doctor today about how the pollen is affecting my breathing which is affecting my running.  She put me on a stronger allergy medicine and a steroid inhaler.   The inhaler, which I didn’t get to start until Tuesday night, is supposed to take 2 weeks to fully start working.   But, I could already tell a difference in my allergies after the first couple of doses of the new medicine. 

Jeremy had games Monday night so I made the best breakfast for myself!  I had an omelet with 1 egg + 2 egg whites, bell peppers, and spinach.  With it, I had a side of turkey bacon and Sara Lee 45 calorie bread with low sugar jelly.  It was delicious!  I could eat breakfast for dinner every night!

When Jeremy got home, we took my bike over to his dad’s so he could air up the tire.  Jake went with us and decided he was going to stay.  We kept telling him we were going home, but he would not move.  He likes it over there because he gets to sleep on the couch in front of a fan.  Someone’s a little spoiled!

Tuesday – Today I had 3.5 miles scheduled.  However, today was a bad asthma day.  I had a hard time breathing all day.  The pollen count was extremely high, according to my weather app, and it was hot and humid.  I knew that there was no way I would be able to run.  Even though I knew I couldn’t run, for some reason got the hair brained idea that I could ride my bike.  I think I just really wanted to get out of the house!    I waited until it cooled down a little and then went for a ride.  I made it two miles before I had to go home because I could not breathe at all!  I actually scared myself a little because I was having such a hard time.  But, once I got home and sat down for a minute I was okay.

Jeremy had games again, so I fixed the same dinner that I did on Monday.  But this time I added some avocado on top of the omelet.  When he got home we watched Married at First Sight.  This show is really interesting and I’m hooked!

 Wednesday – To be honest, I did not want to run today.  I had five miles to do and I was tired and just really wanted to take a nap.  But, I had some Spark and got ready.  I’m really good at finding a million other things to do instead of just heading out the door.  When I started, it was hot and humid.  I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to run much because of the humidity and the pollen.  And the first couple of miles were a little slow, but then it got cloudy and a cold wind started blowing and the last three miles were great!  I could breathe and the cool wind felt amazing!

  I was planning on riding my bike when I got done running, but I was half way through my fourth mile and it started thundering.  I finished my five and as I was heading back home, I could see the rain pouring about a half mile down the road. It was really cool because it was not doing anything at my house yet, but I could see how hard it was raining.  It didn’t take long before it was at my house.   Since I couldn’t ride my bike, I opted for some strength training instead.

Jeremy came home to pick me up so  he could drop me off at the door at Walmart so I could get a few things for dinner.  When I came out the rain was over and the biggest and brightest rainbow I have ever seen was out.  It was beautiful!

I also had ordered a shirt for Jeremy and it came in the mail.  It’s hilarious and he loved it!

I fixed tacos for dinner and then we watched tv and played with Jake before going to bed. 

Thursday  – It rained ALL DAY!

So Jake and I decided to make it a rest day.  I actually had two rest days scheduled this week, so I thought I would use one of them today.

I got comfy in the recliner and watched a ton of Law and Order: SVU while I did some blogging.  It was very relaxing! There was a short break in the rain, and I tried to take Jake for a walk because he was so bored.  But, we were only able to stay out about 10 minutes because it started raining again and we had to run home.

By the time Jeremy got home from working, I was about half asleep.  I ended up falling asleep on the couch way before 10!  

Friday – Today I decided to take another rest day.  It rained all morning and some of the afternoon and when it stopped it was super hot and humid.  Where did the fall weather go??  I decided I would do my other two runs this weekend.  Friday night we went to another hometown football game with some friends.   It was a lot of fun!  We left at the start of the fourth quarter because it got really cold!  I had on a tshirt and jeans and when the sun went down it got chilly!

After the game we grabbed a pizza and headed home.

Saturday – I planned on doing my long run today because Jeremy was going to an auction all day.   When I woke up, my stomach was hurting.  I knew it was from the pizza.  I took a probiotic and was hoping that would make it quit hurting.  No such luck!  I had some spark  and I waited about forty five minutes before going to the park to run.  It was so beautiful out, and I had been so excited about this run, but I really struggled.  

I even almost gave up at 3 miles and called it good.  I don’t know why I never figured this out before, but I had an epiphany today while on my run.  I realized that how my stomach felt was how it felt the last several weeks of marathon training.  I also realized that always before a long run I had eaten pasta or pizza.  And now that I haven’t had any stomach trouble in over a month, I’m sick on my long run and I ate pizza the night before.  Hello!?  Why have I not figured this out before?  I feel like such an idiot!  I never eat pasta, and I very rarely eat pizza.  So, I guess my stomach doesn’t handle them very well.  I guess it’s good that I’m figuring this out now…better late than never.

Anyways, I struggled today because my stomach kept hurting so bad and the air was heavy and humid…which made it difficult to breathe.  At three miles, I stopped to get a drink.  I was going to have some GU, but when I opened it the smell made me gag.  So, I stuck with my water.  I had 6 miles planned, but I wanted to do 7.  I made it 6.62 and I had to quit.  After the first few miles, I started thinking about quitting but I had so many quotes running through my head:  “a bad run is better than no run”, “run when you can, walk if you have to, just don’t quit”, “Just keep running”. Those all helped me get it done.

It was such a bad run, and it’s frustrating!  On Wednesday I ran 5 miles just fine, and could have run more if not for the storm.  But, today I started struggling after about the first mile.  Another thought I had was that a bad run doesn’t make me a bad runner.  I’m learning from my mistakes and next week’s long run will be great!

After my run, I headed home and had some rehydrate and a protein smoothie.  Then Jeremy and I ran some errands and Jake helped him pick okra.

Saturday night we stayed home and watched OU get beat by Ohio State.  

Sunday – Today has been pretty quiet and productive.  I got my house cleaned, did some quick meal prep.  I made ground turkey, and jasmine white rice.  I’m going to top it with avocado and a little soy sauce.  (I got this idea from Taralynn at Simply Taralynn.)  It was easy and quick!  


I am currently working on some posts, and later I’m planning on a 3.5 mile run and of course a walk with Jake.

    I had to read Jeremy’s shirt twice before I finally got it!!
    Jake looks like such a puppy when he is laying on the couch!
    If you go out and run it is never a bad run but I hope your long run next week goes better for you!

      I cracked up when I saw that shirt and had to get it for him! Jake is just a big puppy. He’s such a baby! My run will be better next week…fingers crossed!

    I end up running inside (or taking a rest day) whenever the weather is heavy and humid because it affects my sports asthma. I quit using an inhaler a couple years ago because it started making me feel all jittery and I hated that feeling. I have bad runs but being inside makes it better, and I’m still working my cardio.

      That’s exactly what it does to me! My albuteral inhaler doesn’t make me feel weird, but that’s why I’ve put off using the steroid one. But the new one I’m using doesn’t make me feel like that! I hope the weather cools off soon so you can get outside!

    Great job in pushing through week three! Like you said, it’s accomplished one mile at the time. Ha — I have a similar recipe. Ground sausage, white rice, and soy sauce. So easy! I enjoy so enjoy riding my bike as cross training. I’m happy to see you’ll be doing that too. Part of training is figuring out what food/fuel works and doesn’t work. I’m sure you will sort that out. Do you write it down? It might help recording everything, especially before a long run. I’m sorry to hear your allergies are still acting out some days. I hope that will settle down soon. I love that Okra Homa t-shirt. I should get my sister one. Thanks for linking, Tara!

      I love riding my bike, but it’s hard!! I really admire you guys that ride tons and tons of miles! And I keep thinking this is all I ever did as a kid and I never got tired. Ha!

    Breakfast for dinner is always a good idea!
    I know how bad it feels not completing runs, but sometimes our body just needs a break for whatever reason, even if the reason isn’t obvious. It’s okay, just get back running next time 🙂
    My asthma has been pretty bad lately also, so working out has not been easy!

      I hear ya! And I think that asthma makes my body more tired. I guess when I’m trying hard to breathe all the time it tires me out.

    Good for your for pushing through those runs… I have no idea why some runs are so easy and others are so hard. Sigh.

    I skipped my long run last weekend because I was in Vegas hanging out with an old friend from Australia. 🙂
