Rest, Rest, & Repeat

Hi Guys!  As you can tell from my title, I’ve been doing a lot of resting this week!  That included a short break from blogging too.  I have several reasons why I decided to make it a light week. I am starting half marathon training on Monday (YAY!!) so I wanted to be all rested up! Plus, my shin has been acting up a little bit and I wanted to give it time to calm down.  It’s my fault because I have not been wearing my compression sleeves and I think I wore my old shoes for too long. And, all I ever wear is flip flops.  But, I’ve been massaging and icing it all week and it’s feeling better!  I’m excited about training, but nervous to see how it goes.

I’ve had more good runs than bad runs this month, and my stomach hasn’t been bothering me much, if at all.  So, I’m optimistic that I will be able to train and won’t be bothered by stomach issues.  Since I took a week of rest, I don’t really have much to report.  But, here goes:

Monday

Today was a pretty busy day.  I did sit down today and choose a training plan.  I am going to use Hal Higdon’s Intermediate 1 plan.  Looking at this plan is what made me decide to take it easy this week.  This plan has you running or cross training 6 days a week.  I chose it because I usually try to do something 6 days a week already.  Plus, I thought if for some reason I missed a scheduled run, it won’t be that big of a deal since I am running so much anyways.  The only other half marathon training plan that I have used only had me run 4 days a week, so this one will be a lot different.  Monday night I did some strength training, stretching, and foam rolling. My muscles needed it.  I ended today with 17,482 Fitbit steps!

Tuesday

I had initially thought I would take the whole week off from running.  But, Tuesday I had a lot of energy and just wanted to run.  I know last week my runs were very forced and I couldn’t get my head into them.  I downloaded a new podcast and tried that.  It worked!  I zoned out and was able to run and enjoy it.  I was looking for a crime/mystery podcast, and I found Case File.  I didn’t even read what they were about, I just downloaded it and turned it on.  It was an unsolved murder case in Vinita, Oklahoma, which is 3 hours from me!  But it was in my state.  So, I was really in to it!  I took it easy on my run and ran/walked 2.5 miles and then jogged a half of a mile with Jake.

Then I walked until the podcast was over.  I’m not sure how far I walked because I turned my watch off, but it was for about 25 minutes.  It was a really good podcast!  Then I spent literally 2 hours cutting up okra so we could freeze it!  I love okra, but not this much!

My Fitbit steps count was 21,854 for today.

Wednesday

I had planned on cleaning my house today.  Jeremy had a baseball tournament going this weekend, and one of his umpires was coming to stay with us.  But, my ADD kicked in and I could not focus!  I would start something and get distracted by something else.  After about an hour of feeling like I was just going in circles, I gave up.  I did some more stretching and strength training.  Jeremy and I cooked a huge dinner, and I forgot to take any pictures. I’m telling you, I could not focus on anything!  I”m surprised I didn’t burn anything because two of my friends and I had a group text going and they were pretty entertaining.  We grilled pork chops and I grilled some okra to try. Jeremy actually took a picture of the okra on the grill, so that’s all you get.  🙂

We had grilled pork chops, fried and grilled okra, scalloped potatoes, and crescent rolls. It was a great dinner! I didn’t like the grilled okra as much as I like roasted okra. It did have a good flavor, but it was very mushy. The texture of it reminded me of baby food. So, I probably won’t make that again.  I like my okra crunchy.  You can tell that I didn’t really do much because my Fitbit step count was down from the last couple of days.  I ended today with 12,862.

Thursday

I was determined to finish cleaning my house today! I got started (well, I got out the Pledge to dust) but I was snapchatting (runandlivehappy) with my friend Deneene (at Southern Living Yankee) and I got distracted again, which was fine!  The snapchat filters are way more fun than cleaning!

I don’t know what my deal was this week, but I seriously could not focus.  I really had to force myself to focus on things! I’m not just exaggerating, I do actually have ADD.  I did finally get my house clean late in the afternoon. Then right before dark I took Jake for a 45 minute walk. I’m so glad he pouts because he keeps me active.  I honestly just wanted to lay on the couch and be lazy. I was so tired. But, he laid by the door and pouted until I got up and took him.

I had absolutely no appetite today at all!  I didn’t eat breakfast, and I only ate half of my salad at lunch.

lettuce, spinach, ground turkey, bell peppers, onion, avocado, italian dressing

I just wasn’t ever hungry.  Around 8, my stomach started growling, but nothing sounded good.  I kept going to the kitchen trying to figure out what I wanted to eat, but nothing sounded good at all.  Finally I decided that I really really wanted a cheeseburger.  It sounded so good.  I almost had Jeremy stop and get me one on his way home, but I knew I didn’t need it.  I had some cheerios instead and even though they didn’t sound good, they tasted good once I ate them.

Do you ever have days like that, where you’re not hungry?  Or do you have the opposite, where you are starving all day?  I hate days like that!  My Fitbit count for today was 20,879.  I was trying to catch up to Tricia (MissSippi Piddlin)  who was kicking my tail!

Friday

Happy National Dog Day!

The weather was really weird today.  The middle of the morning and early afternoon was super hot.  Then, around 3 a storm blew by us, but it cooled everything down.  It kept thundering really loud and lightning, but it only sprinkled.  Once it was gone, it was so cool outside.  I took Jake for a long walk and then we sat on the patio so I could work on this post and wait for Jeremy and his umpire friend to come home.

August Goals Report:

Since August is almost over, I thought I would add an update on the goals that I set at the first of the month.  (That seriously feels like a week ago!)  My goals were to add more running mileage and get back on track with healthy eating.  I can report that I have done both!  I didn’t do anything drastic, but I did meet both of those goals.  I went from having 38 miles total in July to 45 miles in August.  And I will still add at least 8 more miles since I will be training this next week.  (This is no where near where I would like to be, but I feel like I started all over after the marathon and I’ve been making slow progress.  So I’m happy with it.)

I also cleaned up my eating.  I started the month with an Advocare Cleanse, and that really helped me to reset my system.  I have cut out a lot of sugar and am eating more fruit.  I have also gotten back on track with just making overall healthy choices with my food.  I can only think of twice this month that I have even had some kind of treat, like a cookie.  I have been meal prepping and have had healthy breakfasts, like protein shakes or overnight oats.  I’ve also been having salads for lunch.  And I’ve been eating healthy dinners and not over eating.  I’m drinking more water and I am taking a probiotic (from Advocare).  This has made all the difference with the troubles I was having with my stomach.  They are pretty much gone!  I feel so much better!!  I don’t feel bloated or full or sluggish!  I guess I just needed a “reset”.

This week I became an Advocare Independent Distributor.  I joined because I love their products and it made sense so I can get a discount on what I buy!  But, I will also share with you!  I loved the cleanse so much!  You can read all about it here.  My favorite product is the Spark!  It gives me so much energy before a run or just when I need a pick me up.  It doesn’t make me shaky and I don’t have a “crash” later on when it wears off.  My favorite flavors so far are the fruit punch and the limeade.

And, obviously I love their probiotic.  It has helped me so much.  I went at least 4 months with my stomach bothering me.  Every day I was having bloating, cramping, and aches.  It didn’t matter what I ate or didn’t eat, it hurt.  I couldn’t run very much because I would get nauseous.  But, the probiotic has fixed all of that!

I also like the Chocolate Mocha Shake.  It is really tasty and filled me up.  You just mix it with water and it is so chocolatey!  It has 24 grams of protein!  Check out my cool bottle!

Lol!! Sorry I distracted you with snapchat. They did have some pretty fun filters though!

So glad you’re loving Advocare so much, too!! It’s been a total game changer in my life!! Physically, mentally and financially!

I need to talk to you about compression sleeves and foam rollers. I’m so overwhelmed when I try to find any that I want!

Congratulations on meeting your August goals. Which half marathon will you be training for? I’ve used Hal Higdon’s plans in the past for a base, with my own modifications. I also found myself very distracted and unable to focus for months now, but I don’t have ADD. It’s great that Jake gets you out of the door! I hope he enjoyed National Dog Day. Good luck as your begin training for your half. Thanks for linking, Tara!

Thank you! I’m looking at the Route 66 half in Tulsa in November. Have you run that one before?

  3. Kimberly Hatting

I have serious ADD when it comes to cleaning….it’s SO difficult to just start one task and finish LOL I always seem to find other things that need to get done first before I finish the original task…it’s crazy.

That’s exactly how I am and I think it takes me longer since I don’t finish something before I start the next thing!!

I wish we would get a thunderstorm here! I love them. Does Jake get frightened of storms? Our lab does!

Great job getting in all your Fitbit steps in. It’s nice that Jake serves as a reminder..lol. You can’t say no to those sad Lab eyes!

No you can’t say no to them! They are too cute! He doesn’t usually get scared of storms. Every now and then if it’s loud thunder it will scare him but once he figures out what it is he’s fine.

One of the doctors I work with is an Advocare coach. She loves it! Glad to hear it works for you.

I wish I had days when I just wasn’t hungry!! I’m hungry all the time! Love, love, love Spark as well….Grape is my new favorite flavor and the Pink Lemonade is pretty good too. Good luck with your half training!

I tried Grape this weekend and I loved it too! I need to try the pink lemonade. I love pink lemonade! Thank you!

Good idea to have a rest week before starting your new training plan.

Did you grow all that okra? I don’t really eat much of it but I do like it in a dry curry with coconut.

My husband has grown it all. It ended up being way more than he thought it would. That sounds good in a curry.

Congrats on signing up for the Half-Marathon. When and where is it? I really love Hal Higdon’s Plans. I think they are well thought through and structured for every level. I have never tried Advocare so far but I will check it out now! I signed up for the Boca Raton Half-Marathon in November. Have a great Running week Tara!

My half marathon is in November too. It’s the Route 66 half marathon in Tulsa. I haven’t actually signed up for it yet…I’m bad about waiting until the last minute! I like Hal Higdon’s plans too! You should try Advocare, especially the Spark!

  9. Crystal Renaud

Hey girl! I have a couple friends who really love Advocare products and especially the spark.
Sounds like August was a good month and Half Marathon training will go fine! You got this girl!

Hi!! You should try the Spark! It gives me so much energy! Thank you, I’m excited about training!

I have no time to even think about goals . . . I’m just crossing my fingers I get to go on my planned for long weekend in September — I need it!

I HATE days when I’m starving for no reason, but they happen. It’s pretty rate for me to lose my appetite unless I’m sick, it’s very hot, or I’m majorly stressed. Not a fan of okra, btw.

    1. Profile photo of Tara

      Tara

Lol I’m not sure I’m going to be a fan of okra after this year either! Hope you enjoy your long weekend!

  11. San

A rest week is always a good idea, when the body calls for it… esp. before starting a new training plan! I am interested to hear how you’re liking the 6 day training plan… I am on a 4-day plan right now and it’s a struggle LOL

I don’t think I’ve ever had ocra. How do you prepare it?

    1. Profile photo of Tara

      Tara

I liked the 4 day plan, but I would really stress out if I missed a run. I think I’ll like this plan and hopefully I won’t get too tired! Most people fry okra, and it’s good like that. But I like it roasted. It tastes like the fried and it’s healthy!

  12. Angela @marathonsandmotivation.com

Great Job meeting your goals! So exciting about the half…which one are you doing? BTW, I just love seeing pictures of your sweet dog. I have 2 big dogs…a lab & a spinone/lab mix and they bring the entire family so much joy 🙂 Thanks so much for linking up with Sunday Fitness & Food!!

Thank you! I’m wanting to do the Route 66 half in Tulsa. And I completely understand about your dogs. Ours brings us such joy too!! Thanks for hosting us!

I’m a lot like this about multi tasking. I think I’m getting a lot done but one thing leads to another then before you know it I have all of these little tasks started and nothing finished!!

LOL Sounds just like me! Most of the time it doesn’t bother me, but sometimes I feel like I’m accomplishing nothing!
