Heat Wave

Hey Everyone!  The first week in August is over and it has been a HOT one!  I hope you are all surviving this heat wave!  I had a great start to the new month and did pretty well getting back into a healthy eating and working out routine.  I tried to stay active everyday.  The heat really affected my running though, but I made sure to get in other workouts on days that I couldn’t run.   Here’s how my week went.

I started the Advocare 10 day cleanse today.  I also ran 6 miles!  That is the furthest I have run in over a month.  And, I didn’t get sick until the very end.  I think I only got sick because it was getting really hot.   Hopefully that is a step in the right direction!  You can read all about what I ate on Monday here.

I have a quick funny story to share.  Jake has gotten so picky about which treats he likes that he now refuses to eat some of them.  He likes Dentasticks and some little chewy vitamins that I give him.  If you try to give him anything else he either won’t take it, or he’ll spit it out and stare at the cabinet hoping for something else.  Jeremy gave him a milk bone Monday morning and he spit it out.  I accidentally stepped on it and broke it so I moved it over by his food bowl.  I tried to feed it to him, but he wouldn’t eat it.  So, I dumped some of his food out on top of it.  That little stinker ate all of the food around it but didn’t touch it!  He’s so spoiled!

Today was a really boring day.  I had to be at work at 7:30 am so I didn’t get a run in.  I worked until 10 and then met up with a good friend for brunch.  We haven’t been able to get together in a while, so we sat in there for forever catching up!  (And since I was on the cleanse and couldn’t eat at home, I ordered scrambled eggs and whole wheat toast.)  After breakfast, I went to visit my grandma because it was her birthday.  My mom was out of town at a conference so we didn’t celebrate until later in the week.

When I went home, I did some strength training and stretching.  And then I may have spent a long time on the couch watching Netflix.  When Jeremy got home, I got suckered in to helping him work in the yard.  Mainly I just felt sorry for him doing it by himself and me watching from inside in the air conditioning.  He had a load of gravel brought in earlier in the day, and they unloaded it in the wrong place.  So, we spent the evening raking and shoveling gravel.  I told you my day was boring!  Here’s how bored I was – I played with the filters on snapchat (runandlivehappy) – sorry friends for the random snaps!  😉

I slept until 8, and by then it was already too hot to run.  So, I had some Spark and did a circuit workout.  After lunch I headed over to my parents to use their elliptical.  I had debated waiting until almost dark to get a run in, but it ended up being 106 so I didn’t think it would cool off enough.

I spent 30 minutes on the elliptical before jumping in the pool!  I had hoped the pool would cool me off but it was so hot outside that even the water was warm.  I only stayed in the pool for an hour because it was so hot.

Then I went home and did an ab workout.  Jake started his coughing/gagging thing again and I sat in the floor with him the entire evening.  He just laid his head on my lap and let me pet him.  Poor baby.

I woke up at 6:45 to run, but when I checked my phone it was already 89 degrees and the heat index was in the upper 90’s.  So, I went back to sleep for a little while.  We were in a heat advisory on Wednesday and Thursday.  According to my weather app, it was supposed to end at 8 pm on Thursday night so I thought I might could get in a quick run after that.  But, just in case I couldn’t, I did a Tabata style workout that afternoon.  Later in the afternoon we took Jake to the vet.  He was still coughing/gagging and it was getting worse.  I had tried to give him some of the Frosty Paws ice cream puppy treats thinking that might soothe his throat but it didn’t help.

He loves going to the vet.

Jake loves going to the vet.  He gets so excited every time he goes.  They have two cats that hang around in there and lay on the counters.  He loves those – although they ignore him.  I think he really just likes the attention everyone gives him.  He got weighed and had lost two pounds, and then he really wanted to get up on the examination table but he’s too big.  He was not a fan of having his temperature taken. But, he did have a little fever.  The vet checked him out and said that basically he had a sinus infection.  He said it was draining into his windpipe and that’s what was causing him to cough.  He gave him an antibiotic and a steroid to dry it up.  He came home and slept all afternoon.

Around 8:30 that night I headed out for a quick run.  I only got 1.5 miles in because we had some friends stop by to help Jeremy move something.  After showering, I cooked us up some delicious chicken in my new Skinny & Company coconut oil.

I have a post coming on Tuesday all about this oil.  It is the best I have ever had – probably because it’s the only coconut oil that is actually real!  Make sure to check back on Tuesday for a discount code and to read about this great new find!

Anyways, I cooked the chicken in the oil and it had a slight coconut taste which was amazing.  I made chicken tacos with bell peppers, onions, low fat cheese, and salsa.   I served them on corn tortillas.  They were delicious.

I woke up at 6:30 and had some Spark.  While I drank it, I laced up my brand new shoes and was ready to go.  Brand new shoes make me so happy.  And, they are just so pretty!

But, when I walked outside it was pouring rain!  So, instead of going back to bed, I changed into some old shoes and hit the road.   This summer I have started loving running in the rain.  As long as it’s not storming, it’s so much fun!  And with as hot as it’s been, it’s a nice change.

It rained for about the first half mile and it was really nice.  Then, the sun came out and it got really humid!  I ran 5.5 miles and went home and stretched.

For lunch I warmed up some of the leftover chicken and peppers and topped it with some salsa.  I spent the afternoon catching up on some blogging and hanging out with Jake.  We had some plans for the weekend, including my grandma’s birthday.  But, I’ll update you tomorrow on our weekend shenanigans!  I hope you had a great week, and have a great week this week!

For this weekly update I’m linking up with Holly of HoHo Runs and Tricia of MissSippiPiddlin for their Weekly Wrap.

I’ve never had a dog to develop a sinus infection. I didn’t even know that was possible. I hope Jake is better. My Skinny & Co package got lost. And now I’m waiting on the replacement one — and it hasn’t come either. I really wanted to try their coconut oil…but whatever. I think I would welcome a run in the rain too. It’s got to be better than this heat. Thanks for linking, Tara!

You will love the coconut oil and all the other products!! I won’t ever buy another kind of oil again!

I didn’t know dogs could get sinus infections! I know they have allergies–I’ve always had cocker spaniels and they are prone to allergies. Poor Jake! I hope he feels better.

and I whine about it being hot here, at least it cools down to the low 60s overnight and early morning running feels bearable. Hope your dog is feeling better, that’s so funny how he ate around the milk bone. My dog has to be tricked pretty good to get him to eat his dewormer. I can’t imagine that tastes very good though.

Lol we have to put medicine inside hotdogs to get him to eat it. Sometimes he will eat the hotdog and spit out the pill! Lol

Great job with your workouts! That swimming pool looks amazing…I can’t imagine being in 106 degree temperatures though! Hopefully your dog will start feeling better now, I bet he loved that nap after the trip to the vet!

I’ve never cooked with coconut oil…the chicken looks like it was so delicious!

I love the pool!! I could spend every day in it! Jake is feeling much better now! I haven’t cooked much with coconut oil but this is the only kind that I have actually been able to taste it.

OMG your lab sounds like mine with how picky he is with the treats. Do you give Jake cosequin? If not you should. They are chewable vitamins that help with bones and joints since labs tend to have hip problems. Our dog loves them and thinks they are treats!

I am glad you figured out what Jakes coughing was from. Our lab who is 10 started doing that earlier this spring. I thought maybe it was allergies, or hairballs, or something and was concerned. Our vet said as dogs age, their airways get tighter so this can be normal. She doesn’t do as much anymore but it still scares me.

Aren’t labs funny?! We do give Jake cosequin and also glucosamine. I can tell a difference in him when he takes them and when doesn’t. It scares me too when he coughs. I’m always afraid that he’s choking on something!

I have been seeing the Skinny coconut oil all over social media lately….looks interesting! I’ve heard a lot of the products are for skincare? Your choes look like Brooks…am I correct? What model? I just got new Adrenalines (GTS 16’s) last week. They’re comfy!

    1. Profile photo of Tara

Yes they are Brooks! Those are the only running shoes I will wear! 🙂 They are the Ravennas. I love them! Alot of the Skinny oil products were for skin care. I really liked the sugar scrub and body butter.

It really has been tough running lately Tara – hang in there, somehow we will get through this. Jake is such a little superstar on your blog. It’s so funny how stubborn they can be when they really want something – I love how the usual long stare at something actually does get them what they want eventually. All this without a voice. Amazing right? I thought I had the only dog who loves going to the vet – apparently that’s not the case! Good job on running that 6 Miler – and yes, brand new running shoes make us runners happy! They look great btw! Have a wonderful Tara! Stay cool!

Jake makes me laugh so much!! He is such a baby, but I always give in! I’m so ready for a little cooler weather! And thanks about my shoes. They won’t look good for long. Lol

It has been HOT, hot, hot here in Maine too! I really dislike running in the heat, so I can’t imagine what you have to bear when it is already 89 degrees at 7 am…yuck!

Your poor pup! He looks so sweet, hope he is feeling better 🙂 Thanks so much for linking up with Sunday Fitness & Food!!

Thank you for hosting! Jake is much better! The next couple of weeks it’s supposed to cool off a little bit, so I’m looking forward to that!
