Things That Make You Go Hmmm

Hi Guys!  Happy Tuesday!  Today I am linking up with PattyErika, and Marcia for today’s edition of Tuesday’s on The Run, where we discuss all things running.  Today’s topic is bizarre things that you have seen while running or racing.  I am even more excited about this topic than last weeks because I have a lot to share.  I have actually seen quite a few things that made me do a double take, or in some cases completely stop running and stare.  Not in a rude way of course.  🙂    I have seen things that really make me scratch my head and make me want to ask people, “What were you thinking?” So, let’s dive right into it shall we?

Okay so during races I have seen some absolutely bizarre things.  I want to start off by saying that to each their own.  Whatever works for you is great.  But these things are strange to me because I just don’t get it.  This year during my first marathon, people did not disappoint.  The first odd thing I saw happened as soon as we started, we hadn’t even gone a half mile yet and a girl ran into an alley and dropped her drawers – right in plain view of everyone running by.  I know people do this, but I’ve never seen anyone do it in plain sight.

The next thing was when we ran up behind a guy and he was jingling.  He had a ton of long, bushy hair, so we couldn’t see what was making the noises until we passed him.  He had on necklaces made of seashells and they wrapped around his neck like a turtleneck.  You couldn’t even see his neck.  I thought that would probably be very uncomfortable.  That really made me wonder.  Maybe they had some significance?

Later on, I saw people taking tequila shots, drinking champagne, and drinking beers – while they were running.   I’m not just talking about stopping at a table and taking one drink.  I saw several people carrying cans of beer with them during the race.  Maybe this one is so strange to me because I can’t stomach alcohol normally, so I can’t even imagine drinking it while running, and while the alcohol is hot.  But, maybe it helps?

Another weird thing I saw was three or four people running barefoot or in flip flops.  This one really made me say hmmmm.  How does that not hurt your feet or give you shin splints?  I’m actually really curious about this.  Not that I would ever do it, but I’m interested to know why someone would.

Okay so those might not be too bizarre.  But, I’ve got a good one saved for the end.

The next few are things that I have seen while out running.

During training, my dad and I were running downtown.  We came across a woman that was standing on the sidewalk having a conversation – with herself.  There was no one else around, and she did not have a phone.  She was arguing with herself.  My dad said she hangs out across the street from his business, and she does that all the time.  I talk to myself sometimes…who doesn’t.  But, this was not like that.  It was a full blown conversation where she was answering herself.  I had to slow down and look again.

Last week I was running in my neighborhood, and one of my neighbors had all of her doors open – car doors, trunk, garage door, front door.  But there were no lights on in the house.  I ran for about forty minutes, and never saw her.  (I go back and forth past her house on a quarter mile stretch.)  Then, I took Jake for a walk and walked by 4 more times and never saw her.  Everything was open for over an hour.  I actually kind of worried that something might be wrong.  I did stop and see if I could see her, but I didn’t want to appear nosy.  So, I kept going.  But, that made me wonder why you would need all of the doors on your house and car open??  I could see if you were carrying in groceries or something…but all of the doors?  She even had the keys in the ignition because the car was dinging since the driver’s door was open.

One time a few years ago, Jeremy and I were walking Jake.  We lived in an apartment complex at this time, and we were going to walk him down to another unit where Jeremy’s dad was working.  We walked down the road and noticed a ton of police cars around the unit where he was.  We didn’t know what was going on, so we kept walking.  When we got closer, and I mean close like in between the police cars, we noticed that all of the policemen were crouched out there with their guns drawn.  We had walked right into the middle of a standoff with a fugitive!  They hurried us out of the way, and we ran into the apartment where Jeremy’s dad was.  When they finally got the guy out, they let us come back out.  It was exciting!

And, I saved the best for last.  I don’t think it’s bizarre, it’s just shocking! (Or at least it is to me because I live in a small town and I don’t ever see stuff like this.)  Last year while running at our local park, I came upon a parked car.  This is pretty normal for the park.  People park their cars and go walk, run, or fish.  But, this one wasn’t empty.  The windows were cracked, and the car was rocking a little.  This was the middle of day!  In broad daylight!  Parked right next to the road!   In a very public place!  I kept thinking surely that’s not what’s really going on.  But, as I got closer, I could see that there were people in it….and that is what was happening!  I could not believe it!  I was completely shocked!  I didn’t know whether to turn around and go back the other way or to keep going right past them.  In order to go past them, I had to go within a foot of the car.  That has to be the most shocking thing that I have ever happened upon.  I decided to go on by and pretend that I didn’t even know what was going on.  I put my head down and sprinted.  Once I was by them I had to stop and laugh.  I was actually embarrassed to run by them.  And, keep in mind that our park is not big.  It’s 1.5 miles on the road around it.  There are tons of runners and bikers who run the road around it.  This was definitely shocking, but also very funny!

OMG

So, those are all the bizarre things that I can think of seeing while running or racing.  I actually like seeing weird things.  It makes my runs more entertaining, and it gives me a good laugh!  Things like these really make me wonder, what people were thinking?!

Do you know why people run barefoot?  Have you seen anything bizarre?

I never see people running barefoot but I can’t imagine that being comfortable. And those necklaces, that would be hard to run with. And we all know ppl go in the woods, but at least be discrete about it.

Oh my god! you have seen some crazy things during runs! Didn’t you drive around not that long ago to find out about a shooting? and now walking into a standoff? That sounds terrifying!

There has been a barefoot running movement for sometime, some of it started after the release of Born To Run, but there were others who started it before. I have seen lots of people running barefoot in races, including the author of Born to Run at a local race.

I had a friend that read that book! I couldn’t think of the name of it. She really wanted to try it after reading that book. That standoff was years ago. And we did go look for a shooting. Stuff like that doesn’t usually happen in our town so it’s kind of exciting when it does. Lol but talking about them together makes it sound like we live somewhere dangerous! We really don’t. 🙂

Who does that in the middle of the day in a place that is busy?! That is so crazy! I don’t even know what I would have done if I would have seen that!

I know tons of people that run barefoot or in sandals. First time I saw a barefoot runner I thought she was out of her mind. I’ve run barefoot but never on asphalt! When I go sans shoes it’s on grass.

Does it hurt your feet? I think I would just be afraid that I would step on something and hurt my foot. lol

I think I’ve seen barefoot runners at all 9 of my marathons. It’s a thing. A weird thing, in my opinion. Yikes on running past the car with the “action” in it. And yikes to the police standoff.

That was the first time I’d seen the barefoot running. I think it would hurt or I’d be too worried about watching what I was stepping on that I’d fall somehow!

We had a neighbor that came home every Saturday night, opened all the car doors and trunk, and left it like that until well into Sunday.

    Every week.

Pretty sure he was airing things out, if you know what I mean. My cat LOVED him. lol

Oh gosh, people talking to themselves. Happens ALL the time in Chicago – it’s a mental health thing. And I HAVE seen people running barefoot… I think they’re just trying to be extra legit or something… I don’t get it! Some of the weirdest things I’ve seen in races are just the costumes people wear – I can’t imagine how HOT they get!

Yes! I have seen a person in a full gorilla costume. I wondered how they ran in that!
