Marathon Training Week 16

Hi Friends!  This was a great week of running, working out, and eating.  I went into this week with a completely different mindset than I had the week before.  I decided that I was going to make healthier choices and not miss any runs.  I want to know that I tried my best when I get to that starting line, and to do that I needed to change the way I was thinking about it.  I had in my mind that the hard part was over and I was on the downhill. Which technically I am.  But, I didn’t want that to mean that I could slack off on everything and eat whatever I wanted to.  I know how important these few weeks before the race are, and I needed to treat them that way.  I sat down Sunday night and planned my week out as far as food, running, and workouts.  Which I have done, but not consistently.  And, I got up Monday morning with a totally new outlook!

Monday – Since I meal prepped on Sunday, I had lunch ready for the whole week.  I ate roasted veggies and chickpeas.

And then I had a banana for a snack.  Today was supposed to be a rest day.  But, at this point, we thought we had plans on Wednesday, and I wasn’t sure I would get to run then.  So, I decided to go ahead and get a run in today.  I set out without a number of miles in mind, just at least 4, but more would be great.  I just wanted to see how my legs would feel after my long run on Saturday.  The weather was hotter than it’s been.  I’m not complaining though, I love hot weather.  I ran around 4 that afternoon and it was 86 degrees and really humid.  My legs were super tired from Saturday so it was more of a walk/jog than a run.

Either way, I got 4 miles done, and then I took Jake for a mile walk/run too.  Since I did 4 miles, I thought I would do 5 on Tuesday and then would be able to rest Wednesday before 8 on Thursday.  And, since my legs were so tired, I decided against doing an Insanity workout.  I just did some squats and a lot of stretching instead, and called it good!

For dinner, Jeremy grilled the rest of the hot links that he had, and all of my turkey sausage.  We sat on the back porch while he grilled enjoying the weather.  It was dark, but it was still warm and the stars were beautiful!  We lit some citronella candles and sat out there for a long time. Marathon Training Week 16 New Blog Post Run and Live Happy1

I ate two of the turkey sausages, and then cut up the other two and put them in with my lunches for the rest of the week.  And, I passed on any dessert!  That’s a huge accomplishment for me!  We had macadamia nut cookies!  I also made it to bed early!   Today was a great day of healthy choices!

Tuesday  – I started the day off with an English muffin with low sugar jelly.  After breakfast, I did some strength training.  Then for lunch I had roasted veggies and turkey sausage.  And later, for a snack I had an apple.

Tuesday afternoon, I had to run some errands after work.  Once I got home, I got changed and headed out for a run.  I made it down the street once, and on my way back I almost stepped on this guy!

I really, really, really hate snakes!  I stood there for a good 5 minutes trying to figure out how to get by him.  He was laid out across the road at a place where there is just a drop off to a creek.  So, I couldn’t run in the grass around him, and I was too chicken to try and jump over him.  I finally just sprinted past him, praying that he wouldn’t bite me!  I ran over to the other side road by my house, but the little dog that bit me was out and I didn’t feel like being chased.  So I went back to the road that the snake was on.  By the time I got back, he was gone.  But I still ran a little faster over that part of the road every time I went by it.

I got 5 miles done, and then I took Jake for a mile walk.  He didn’t want to run, he was more interested in smelling everything on the way.

After that, I went home and did some core work and squats.  I wanted to do an Insanity workout, but I just did not have the energy.

For dinner I fixed a grilled cheese, and I ate half the package a few slices of turkey on the side.  I did not get to bed early.  I was not tired at all!  Even when I forced myself to lay down at 11:30, I could not go to sleep.  I guess I got a second wind, because I couldn’t sit still all night.

Wednesday  – Even though I didn’t get much sleep, I woke up really energized today!  I started my day off with an English muffin and some green tea.  For lunch I had roasted veggies and an apple.  Since I had run the last two days, I decided to rest today.  Our plans changed, and we didn’t have anything to do.  So, I rode around with Jeremy while he checked on some of his jobs.  I did do some planks and squats, but that was it.  We also took Jake for a long walk that evening.  All the neighbors were out, so it took us longer because we had to stop and talk to everyone, and let Jake play with all of their dogs.

It was late when we got home and were ready to eat, so we fixed a frozen pizza.  I hate eating late, so I only ate a piece and a half.  I wasn’t very hungry anyways.  That was my first unhealthy choice for the week!  I’m pretty proud that I made it a whole 2 days! LOL

Thursday – Today was one of those days where I felt hungry all day!  I ate an English muffin and a banana for breakfast.  Then I had a handful of nuts for a mid morning snack.  For lunch I had a jr. roast beef sandwich from Arby’s and some roasted veggies.  After work, I ate a Cliff Bar and headed out for an 8 mile run.  It was a very difficult run!  I started out at my parent’s and headed to our park.  In their neighborhood, I didn’t notice the wind very much.  But, when I got to one side of the park, I was running uphill into 24 mph wind!  #runnerproblems  The pollen count was also “very high”, which made it very difficult to breathe.

This route is a circle, so I had to run around it 5 times before I hit my 8 miles, and the wind slowed me down every time I hit that one side.

I didn’t bring my inhaler with me because I haven’t been needing it, but I was sure wishing I would have had it.  My pace was a lot slower than I would have liked, but that’s okay.  I was so glad when I finished, because I was super thirsty!  I downed a whole bottle of water as soon as I got back to my parent’s.  Then I headed home to meet Jeremy, and we went to feed the horse.

After that, I did some planking.  I love doing this.  I can always feel it the next day, so I know it works.  I just need to do it more often!

Then I fixed us some tacos with sautéed onions and peppers for dinner.

We watched 60 Days In until around 11, and I went right to sleep.  This is a really cool show.  It’s about 7 people who have voluntarily been put in jail.  No one knows they are there under false pretenses, except the sheriff.  The sheriff is trying to learn about what goes on in the jail and improve it.  Each of the people had their own personal reasons for wanting to do this.  One of them is Muhammad Ali’s daughter, and she is a social worker.  She thought spending that amount of time in jail would help her to understand her clients better.  It’s a pretty interesting show.

Friday – I was out of English muffins, so I had some oatmeal for breakfast.  For lunch, I used the leftovers from our tacos, and made a salad.  I finally did an Insanity workout today.  I did the cardio abs, and then I also did some planks.

Then I went to Jeremy’s softball games so I could get out of the house for awhile and enjoy the weather.  I’m not a huge softball fan, but I will go and watch my husband….or play on candy crush!

When the games were over, we went home and I threw a frozen lasagna in the oven.  We had that with some salad and garlic bread for dinner.

Saturday  – I woke up early again so I could meet my dad to run.  Really early!

Marathon Training Week 16 New Blog Post Run and Live Happy (15)

We only had 12 miles to run today, and I was really excited about it! It was a really great run!  My legs felt rested, and I had a lot of energy!  This was one of our best runs!

Sunday – Today was a cross training day.  I did the cardio abs Insanity workout, a lot of squats, and some planks.

This week was a great week of training, and as of today I only have 13 days until my first marathon!  I can’t believe this journey is almost over!

For this weekly update I’m linking up with Holly of HoHo Runs and Tricia of MissSippiPiddlin for their Weekly Wrap. I’m also linking up with the other Weekly Wrap bloggers.

Great job on those planks! After my marathon, I’m going to start working on some of those other aspects of training. I really need to focus on core.

Ewwww to the snake. I hate snakes. Luckily we don’t have too many around here in suburbia!

I need to focus more on my core too. After my race I’m going to really hit it hard. I’m afraid to do anything to different right now. We don’t have many snakes either, and I’m a little ways out of town. That’s actually only the third one I have seen. I am so scared of them! lol

I see a few snakes during the summer, but usually not this early. I would have worried about it on every loop. You’ve done a great job with your training. I know you must be getting very excited. I’ve been working on planking too (but not every day) and feel it for a day or two. You had some really healthy food choices this week. Your veggies really look yummy. Thanks for linking with us Tara. Enjoy that taper.

Thanks! You inspired me to do more planking with all of your instagram pics! So far I have continued to do it every day (since Tuesday, I think). I think if I challenge myself to do it, like in the form of a streak, I’ll do it so I don’t break the streak. I am getting really excited about the race, but the nerves are starting to kick in too. It’s finally feeling real!

Knock on Wood, I have never seen a snake while out running. UGH. I don’t know what I’d do! Great job on the planks! I do a lot of planking because I hate ab work (especially crunches). Good luck on the marathon!

Thank you! I really hate ab work too, and I am bad about slacking on it. But, I’m trying!

  4. Heather @ Polyglot Jot

Wow glad you got passed that snake! That show sounds really interesting… I was hoping it was on Netflix but I had no luck when I searched for it. Is it just on TV?

Me too!! It’s a brand new series on our cable. It is really cool! Maybe it will be on Netflix soon. I don’t have Netflix, but I think I’m missing out on some great shows!

OOHh!! Snakes! I would have sprinted past it too! you got bit by a dog? That’s not cool!! That is very irresponsible of its owners! Good job on your workouts this week!

    1. Profile photo of Tara

Thank you!! I agree it’s irresponsible of the owners!! They didn’t even apologize, and that dog still roams free. And the owner is a sheriff deputy!!

  6. Jenn

Thirteen days! That’s amazing! You are going to do great!

Pollen has been miserable where I live, too. It’s so upsetting how something like that can just derail all your efforts.

It is! I never knew it bothered me so much until I started this training. It’s crazy!

  7. Crystal Renaud

You are doing so great on your training Tara! You are so going to be ready for your Marathon!
Snakes don’t bother me, spiders…I HATE them!

Thank you!! I feel ready. I just hope I can keep the nerves away! I hate spiders too…just not as much as snakes! Lol

  8. Meagan

Great week! It’s definitely a good idea to commit to eating healthy and sticking to your training leading up to race day. What we eat definitely has a huge effect on how we feel in general and energy-wise. So sorry you essentially got caught between that snake and the dog that has bit you in the past! It is NOT funny, but it was a little funny to read about since I was reading about it after the fact and everything worked out alright (don’t hate me). I’m glad you had a great long run, too! That’s always such a boost.

  9. Tricia@MissSippipiddlin

Great job on your runs and spacing them out too. I am so not good at meal prepping. 🙁 I can’t wait for more summer like nights, sitting outside and enjoying the stars.
I didn’t remember you had a horse?? Do you ride? You know my family barrel races and my daughter goes off to bigger shows to compete.

I don’t like snakes but I hate Spiders even less!
Thanks Tara for linking up with us!

I love summer nights! We are outside every chance we get! I ride a little, when we have time. Barrel racing is my favorite event to watch! That’s really cool your family competes. We go to a lot of rodeos around here. Maybe sometime we’ll run into each other!

  10. Dee @ The Hesitant Runner

Bravo on making great choices this week! I can’t wait to run in shorts and a tank top — I’m a heat loving runner too! I would have been completely freaked out by the snake too — one of my biggest fears. Can’t wait to hear how the marathon goes — sounds like you are ready!

Thank you!! The weather here has been beautiful, and all I want to do is be outside! I am ready! I’m getting excited!
