Marathon Training Week 14

Hi Everyone!  I finished week 14 of my marathon training, and I’m getting so excited!  Also a little terrified!   I had a really great week of running and working out!  I have kind of felt like most of my training has not been so great, or that I’ve had more bad runs than good runs, but I think (hope) it’s all in my mind.  I felt so much better this week about my running.   And, now I only have four weeks until my marathon! Here’s how my training went this week, and also what I’ve been up to.

Monday 

Today was a rest day from running.  I took Jake for a long walk…twice!  After the first walk, he rested, and then he started whining to go again.  The weather was beautiful, so I didn’t mind.  Spring is here!

Once we were done with the second walk, I did an Insanity workout.  I did the plyometric cardio workout, and it was hard!  It was a 45 minute workout, and I only made it 25 minutes.  If you have never done Insanity, there are several different workouts, but  this one is 45 minutes of running and jumping – you never stop!

That afternoon, I started some chicken breasts in the crock pot so I could have some for my lunch the rest of the week.   I didn’t have time on Sunday to cook them.  I laid these in the crock pot and put in some a lot of minced garlic.  I also threw in some Lawry’s, paprika, and some Herbes De Provence.  Then I covered them with chicken stock and let them cook on low for about five hours.

That night for dinner I fixed pork chops.  I had some center cut chops and I broiled them.  I also had some bone in chops which I fried for Jeremy.  We had some scalloped potatoes with them.  I forgot to take a picture because I was so hungry by the time they were done!    We had a bunch of pork chops left over, so that meant dinner on Tuesday.   I did take a picture of dessert.  I have no self control, and I ate one two of these 170 calorie each cookies.  And they were so worth it!

I stayed up late again watching 2 Broke Girls.  I think we have all the episodes on our DVR! 

Tuesday

Tuesday morning I had some yogurt and a banana for breakfast.  Then for lunch I had a salad with roasted peppers, avocado, chicken, and roasted red pepper vinaigrette.  I also had some fresh pineapple that I found on sale at the grocery store.

Tuesday afternoon I went for a run.  I ran 5 miles in the wind!!  It was very difficult running into the wind, but when it was behind me, I did run faster!

I have been running at our local park because the course is more difficult than the one I run at home.  There are lots of hills!  I usually run around the outside of the park on the road, but today I wanted to see what the path in park was like.  I’ve never run it before.  I have not been down in there for a really long time, so I had forgotten about all of the stairs.  I had to run up and down these for a while!

After my run, I went home and finished the Insanity workout that I started on Monday.  My whole body was tired and sore!  But, that makes me feel like I have done something!  I also tried planking, but someone wanted my attention and kept crawling under me.

When Jeremy got home, I fixed him the leftover pork chops and macaroni and cheese.  I fixed myself some scrambled eggs, toast, bacon, and avocado.

I laid down at 11, and I was out as soon as my head hit the pillow.  I slept until my alarm rang.  I seriously don’t think I have ever done that!  I must have been tired!

Wednesday

Today I had some tea and a banana for breakfast on the way to work.

Then I had a turkey and ham sandwich from Subway for lunch, and the rest of my pineapple.  My friend picked it up and got the wrong kind so I picked off the roast beef.

Oh, and guess what I found when I checked my email today!

THE Bart Yasso!!!  I cannot even describe how excited I was when I read that!  That really made my day, actually my whole week!  And, I sent him a tweet, and he even tweeted me back!!  How awesome is he?!

After work on Wednesday, I ran 5 miles.  I had 9 scheduled, but I knew Jeremy was working late on Thursday so I planned on running 9 then.  The weather was almost 20 degrees hotter today than it was on Tuesday.  It was 81, but the wind was blowing hard so it made it feel a little cooler.  One mile into my run, I got the worst cramp in my calf!  I have never had cramps in my calves before.  It hurt so bad that I had to stop and rub it and then walk around for a little while trying to work it out.  It finally went away, and I was able to finish my run.  I guess I wasn’t hydrated enough??  I don’t know but it sure was painful!

After my run, I went home and forced myself to do another Insanity workout.  I was super tired, and my whole body felt tired and sore from doing workouts the last two days, and I really didn’t want to do it, but I am hoping that it will help with running.  I did the Cardio Abs.  Since I had just run, I skipped the warm-up part with all of the jogging and jumping and cardio, and I went right for the abs.  It was a good workout and it made my stomach burn!  I kind of half way did it, and I was a little sore on Thursday, but not like I thought I would be.  After running and doing that workout, I was wiped out! 

But, when Jeremy came home we took Jake for a walk and played ball with him until he was wiped out too!  Then I got cleaned up and ready to cook dinner.

I made bar-b-que chicken legs and chicken breasts in the crock pot again.  To go with it, I made salad and  my roasted potatoes.  This time I added a ranch seasoning packet to them before I cooked them.  Jeremy’s dad came over to eat.  They both loved the chicken!  We had a ton of food, and a ton of leftovers!

I went to right bed around 10 because I was so tired, but I could not go to sleep.  I ended up laying there for almost two hours before I fell asleep. 

Thursday

Today I did not want to get out of bed.  I just wanted to sleep!  But, the alarm kept annoying me so I got up and fixed some breakfast.  I had strawberry greek yogurt with bananas and chia seeds.

Then I headed to work.  One of my friends told me I looked really tired, especially my eyes!  Is that a nice way of saying you look like crap?  LOL  I know she didn’t mean it like that, but it makes me laugh every time someone says that because…..quick story – One time at a work meeting, a friend wanted me to ask the lady sitting on the other side of me if she had any Tylenol.  I asked and she said to me, “I knew you didn’t feel good, you look awful today.”  Thanks! LOL

For lunch I had a salad with chicken, avocado, mixed peppers, and roasted red pepper vinaigrette.

After work, I headed home to get ready to run 9 miles.  I noticed that my leg was hurting a little when I left work.  I bought some really cushioned flip flops last year when I had this problem, but I guess they don’t work.  I thought after I taped it and put on my compression sleeve that it would go away.  It did not.  I made it one mile and had to quit because the pain was so sharp.  I went home and soaked it in the bathtub, then put a heating pad on it, and then used the stick massager on it.  It is the same leg that was hurt before I started this training, and it scared me thinking I have come this far and could be injured again.  Luckily, after massaging it for a while, the knot where the pain was coming from went away and it didn’t hurt anymore. 

Thursday night for dinner I fixed an omelet with roasted peppers and a little cheese on top – for extra goodness!   I found those peppers at Wal-mart.  They are frozen Green Giant veggies, and they are super good!

Friday

When I got up, I fixed some eggs and toast for breakfast, along with some BeFit Pre workout.  Then I headed to the park to run a little bit.  I know I missed my 9 miles this week, but I didn’t want to run too hard since I had 18 miles scheduled on Saturday.  I went down on the path again and ran 3.76 miles.

Then I went to my mom’s and tried out their new elliptical for a little while.  When I got home, I took Jake for a walk, but he wanted to run.  We ended up running a mile before he finally stopped to sniff everything.  Then we walked until he was tired.

Friday night we ordered pasta for dinner.  I always like to eat pasta before a long run.  We ordered Domino’s.  I ordered pasta and Jeremy ordered a pizza.  I ate most of the pasta and two pieces of pizza.  I was so full, but it helped so much!  

Saturday

One thing that I have not done very good with this week was getting enough sleep.  Friday night we stayed up until midnight watching TV.  Then I got up at 6:30 on Saturday morning to run.  I was not hungry at all, but I forced myself to eat some eggs and toast.  Then I went to meet my dad to run.  This was the best run I have had, and it was a huge confidence booster!  It was a little difficult due to the strong winds, and it didn’t seem to matter what direction we were running, we were running into it.  But, I felt good and I didn’t get tired at all until the very last mile!  I really have been stressing and worrying about whether I would be ready for the race, but this run helped to calm my nerves.  For now!  🙂

I am really going to try hard to get more sleep next week!  

Sunday

We had a lot planned on Sunday, so I did not get in any cross training.  🙁  

I think my running during the week was okay, but my long run was great!  I am still really excited about it.  I have 20 miles scheduled next Saturday, and I hope that it goes as well as this one did.  I’m going to try to sleep more so I’m not so tired during the week, because I know that will eventually catch up with me on my long run.

Do you use a banana hanger, or just let them sit on the counter?  I can’t figure out which one makes them last longer.

    The insanity workouts look intense! I’ve never tried one but I think I would like it! I need to cross train more than I do… Finding the time is a challenge.

    I have done those Insanity workout too and I hate them! They are so tough! I’d rather go out and run my five miles. ..haha. You deserved two cookies after doing that workout.

      LOL I really really hate them too! But, I think they help, so I’m going to keep trying them until my race is over.

    I met Bart Yasso last fall at the Chicago Marathon expo, and he did an interview for my blog book club when we read his book. He is THE nicest guy, just what you’d think. He’ll be at Big Sur so I’ll get to meet him again…

    Calf cramps are the absolute worst! Thankfully, I’ve only experienced them a couple times –both times during half marathons where I was probably dehydrated from the heat and had to walk. Every time I’d try to run (after walking) the calf muscles would seize up like crazy. I have never tried Insanity, but have heard how tough it is.

    Bart Yasso is incredibly friendly and approachable. He seems to love meeting every single runner. I’ve never tried Insanity, but everyone says those workouts are killer.

      I would love to meet him someday! Hopefully he’ll be at a race that I run sometime! Insanity is killer! But when you’re done, you know you’ve worked out! Lol you can feel it everywhere!

    Four weeks? You are almost there. Way to rock that 18 mile run! It’s amazing you weren’t tired until the end. You are definitely doing something right. LOL. Those calf cramps are no joke. For me, they just seem to come out of nowhere. How cool Bart Yasso is following you on Twitter. I love White Chocolate Macadamia cookies. There would be no self control.     Great job on your 18 miler, and yes you are going through all the head games I went through with marathon training. In the end I was very well prepared for my race and I have no doubt you will be too!
    Your food was so much better than mine was last week. I should prep more and fix “my” kind of food but honestly with a family, it is hard to cook twice! Thanks Tara you are kicking butt on the fitbit challenges too!

    That chicken you made looks really yummy! I love the smell of having something cooking away in the crock pot. That picture of your dog running with the ball in his mouth is so cute, he looks so happy!

    The park you run in looks really nice. I’ve been feeling the same way as you about my training – like I’ve had more bad runs than good. But I have been able to stick to my training for the most part. Hopefully come race day we’ll both be good to go and we’ll be mentally tough from enduring all of those bad runs during training!

    Wonderful long run and solid week of training! My 10-month-old crawls under me while I plank and the toddler tries to sit on me… somehow kids and animals must think planking moms are a jungle gym 🙂
