Hi! This is part two of my week last week. This is all about my weekend getaway at the basketball state tournament! I left off on Thursday night when we went to bed. The rest of the weekend was full of fun, food, and no sleep!! So, here we go.
Thursday night we got to bed around midnight. On Friday morning, Jeremy got a text at 6:15 telling him that his game that day was at noon at The Big House! (The Oklahoma City Fairgrounds)
We went back to sleep until about 7:30. Once we got ready to go, we went downstairs to eat our complimentary breakfast. (It’s complimentary because the association pays for the referee’s rooms and breakfasts.) They had so many choices, and it all looked delicious! The name cards for each food actually said – Tastes as good as it look. I had eggs, yogurt, granola, and a banana.
Then we went to the fairgrounds so we could watch a little of the game before Jeremy’s.
They have the court in the big arena, and on one side of the floor is a fenced off area that is only for referees and their families.
We get to sit court side, and all of the state tournament referees that aren’t officiating come out to support each other. One of the wives described it as a big fraternity.
This group of people was amazing! Most of them are from the same area and already knew each other. I had only met a couple of them before, but they all welcomed me into their group. They were all so friendly! It was nice to be around people who understand what we do every day! It was also nice to have people to talk to since we were there all day! During Jeremy’s game, I sat with his partner’s wife. Everyone kept telling us what a good job they were doing.
In the middle of the game, Jeremy’s partner blew his whistle and called a time out for one of the coach’s. But, he started laughing and put the ball back in play without doing the timeout. We were all confused, and the coach looked over at our section and said,”I said 5 out, not timeout.” He was calling a play! It was pretty funny!
Jeremy’s game went really good, and I was really proud of him!
When the morning session (4 games) was over, we went back to the hotel so Jeremy could shower. Then we stopped at Taco Mayo on our way back to the evening session (4 more games). I watched 12 hours of basketball on Friday. That’s dedication! I ordered a taco and a big freakin chicken quesadilla. That’s the name of it. Jeremy and I each tried a piece of the quesadilla, and we threw the others away. It was too spicy and didn’t taste like it was cooked all the way.
We went back to the fairgrounds to watch the last four games. I had to get up and walk around. My legs were hurting from sitting all day. I walked all through the lobby. There were so many places to eat. The nuts smelled divine! And the ice cream sundaes looked delicious. But, we were going to eat when the games were over, plus it was all so expensive!
When all the games were finally over, at 10:15, we all went to Chilis. They were the only ones that would stay open later for us. There was around 30 of us that went, and they gave us an entire section. Jeremy and I shared a California club sandwich. And then we sat around visiting with everyone.
It was after one am before we went back to the room and it was like heaven crawling into that bed! Then we watched TV until 2.
We got up at 8:30 so we could go down and eat breakfast and then get ready and packed to check out.
I had the same breakfast that I did on Friday morning. But, I added a sausage link. Jeremy had biscuits and gravy and said they were great!
We checked out and headed back to the fairgrounds to watch all the finals. Jeremy wasn’t calling any games, but we went to support the other refs.
Even though there were only four games today, they still had two sessions. So, after the morning session, we went with three other couples to The Garage to eat lunch. I know it is a chain, but I don’t know if they are only in Oklahoma or not. If you have not eaten at one of these, you are missing out! They have the BEST burgers! I don’t eat burgers very often, but when I do it’s a Garage burger. (Channeling the most interesting man!) I ordered a classic cheeseburger and Jeremy and I shared some fries. It was delicious!
Then we headed back to the arena to watch the last two games. On the way back in, we walked up on this van in the parking lot. Talk about a hoarder! There was barely enough space for someone to sit in the driver’s seat. The rest of the van was crammed full of stuff! I had never seen anything like it.
My throat was hurting, so I got a chai tea latte to sip on during the last game. It was so hot, I could barely hold the cup.
During the fourth quarter of the last game, we said our goodbyes and got on the road. Several of them were going out for dinner after the games, but we were tired and had a two hour drive so we declined.
We got home at 10:30 and went to see Jake. I missed him so much!! And he was so happy to see us!
Sunday morning I woke up at 5 am and couldn’t breathe. My face and head were throbbing from so much sinus pressure, and my chest was so full of congestion that it hurt to breathe in. I was planning on running 16 miles, but I could hardly go from the bed to the bathroom without being out of breath. So, as much as I hated not to run, I knew there was just no way I could do it. My allergies had been really bad all weekend. Everyone else that I talked to there was having the same trouble. I thought since lots of others were having problems too that maybe it had something to do with sitting in the arena all weekend. But, whatever caused it, it turned into an infection fast! I called my doctor and she called in an antibiotic and a steroid. I also went and bought a new humidifier. I was hoping that all of this would help, and that by Monday I could run.
I was much better on Monday, but not totally well. I decided to wait one more day before running. I’m going to have to move runs around, but I will make up that 16 miler – probably this coming weekend.
This weekend was so much fun that I didn’t want it to end. I met a lot of wonderful people, and I got to cheer on my husband in his biggest game of the season. Overall, it was a blast, and now I’m ready for some sleep! And baseball season!
In other news, my Be Fit Giveaway ended Sunday night. Congratulations to the winner!!
