What’s Your Favorite Salad Topping?

I love salads!  I love how filling they are.  And, I especially love how versatile they are.  You can pretty much add anything you want on top of lettuce and call it a salad.  But, I like to eat salads to be healthy.  If you start adding lots of extra toppings, you can end up eating more calories and fat than you would if you had a cheeseburger and fries!  That’s one thing you have to watch out for with fast food and restaurant salads.  Fried chicken and full fat dressings are very unhealthy.

Salad topping

Salads are one of my favorite things to make because they are so easy to prep.  I can fix them on Sunday nights and have lunch ready for the entire week.

I try to find toppings that are not only healthy, but that taste good too.  I have also tried to make my own salad dressing.  But, so far I have not mastered that skill.  Actually it has been an epic disaster each time I’ve tried.  So for now I will stick with low fat, low calorie dressings.  I like the Skinny Girl brand.  All of their dressings are no sugar, no calories, and no fat.

Even though I like to try different toppings, I feel like I usually make the same salads.  I always have grilled chicken, avocado, and steamed or roasted veggies. Every now and then I’ll throw on some croutons.

I have tons of different salads pinned on my Pinterest board.  But, I’ll be honest with you.  I have made very few of them.  They all look amazing, but I always find myself going right back to the same toppings.  I am good about mixing up which lettuce I use though.  I’m not a huge fan of iceberg, especially if it’s by itself.  My favorite is probably romaine.  Usually I will mix romaine with baby spinach and baby kale.

Salads are definitely a staple in my kitchen.  They are so quick and easy, and I love that I can just throw everything in a bowl together.

I love making pizza salads! Throwing in black olives, pepperoni (or turkey pepperoni), banana pepper, peppers, etc. Whatever it is that you like on your pizza, throw it in the salad! That’s my favorite 🙂

That sounds delicious! I’ll have to try that soon!

Ranch, all the way LOL. I used vinaigrette for a while but the vinegar is giving me a headache almost as soon as it touches my tongue so I had to stop using it.

I love ranch! It’s my favorite! But, if I eat it, I tend to drown my salad in it. I think I could eat it on everything!

I do love a great salad. But I am terrible with dressing, I always add more than I have too. In fact, as terrible as it will sound I bet I end up putting too many toppings on my salads, I would probably get less calories with a burger, LOL
Depends on what I am eating with it that decides what flavor. But Ranch, Itallian and 4 cheese are usually my top favorites. I’ve not heard of SkinnyGirl brand before, I”ll have to watch for it next time at the grocery!!!

4 cheese dressing sounds really good! I’ll have to look for that one. I think I have a hard time finding toppings because if I put everything that I want on there, it would probably be a ton of calories! The Skinny Girl Poppyseed tastes just like the sweet onion sauce at Subway!

    Yum, now I’m hungry.
I’m a huge fan of ranch dressing, but I know it’s pretty high in fat so I try not to use it too often.
Other than that my favourites are balsamic vinaigrette, and Italian dressing. They are so good!

I love ranch! But I try to not use it too because I eat way too much of it!

I do love a good salad! I try to have a good mix of veggies and protein and greens. I don’t use salad dressing but rather a flavored vinegar or olive oil. We have a lot of local olive oil companies here (San Diego area) that press their own olive oils and vinegars and they’re delicious all by themselves! Glad to “meet” you through the blog hop!

I like olive oil and vinegar too! I bet the local ones are really good! Nice to meet you too! 🙂

I love salads! However, when left to my own devices my salads are probably higher in calories than a treat from Dairy Queen. I haven’t tried the Skinny Girl salad dressings but have really wanted to. I should just order them from Amazon since I can’t find them locally.

They are all really good! The poppyseed is my favorite!

Alright, this is perfect for me because I have been eating so many more salads lately! I mean they’re healthy, yes, but I have actually been CRAVING them. I’ve been lazy and gone with bag mixes for the greens, but I’m kind of like you – avocado, chicken and the sunflower seeds I saw in a few of your photos are some of my favorite topics. I agree that making your own dressing is often a disaster (I see people do it and I’m just like stop pretending that tastes good! haha maybe it does to them, but not me) lately I have been using this amazing White Grapefruit Balsamic Vinegar. I don’t even use oil. I could just drink it, the flavor is so good!

LOL I am the same way when I see people’s write about how good their homemade dressing is. I tried one time to make some kind of avocado dressing and it had garlic in it. I followed all the directions exactly, and the finished product tasted like straight garlic. I about gagged! I have gotten to where I use bagged lettuce all the time. I used to buy all fresh, but I am too lazy now to wash it and cut it up!
