Week 5 Marathon Training


Week 2 (1)

Hello Everyone!

Week 5 Marathon Training has come to an end.  It was a good week of training, and I stuck to my plan pretty closely.  

Monday – Rest Day – I really needed this after all of the holiday festivities.

Tuesday – I was supposed to run 3 miles.  But, I didn’t.  We went shopping all day.  I did get up early with the intention or running before we left, but the temperature was in the 20’s and there was ice on the road.  So, I went back to bed!  I did get a good workout in from walking around all day! 

Wednesday – I was supposed to run 5 miles.  But, I didn’t realize that until after I ran 4 miles.  About an hour after I got home, I looked at my training plan and realized that I had looked at it wrong so I only ran 4.  The first 2 miles of this run were really good, but then I started having some pain in my left leg.  I walked/slowly jogged the last 2 miles.  I went home and iced, massaged, and foam rolled my legs. I think my leg was sore from wearing my Uggs and walking around all day on Tuesday.

Thursday – I was supposed to run 3 miles, but I ran 6!  I figured I would make up some for missing Tuesday.  My leg felt so much better when I got up, but to be safe I decided to run on the treadmill.  I thought it might be easier on my legs.  It was, and once I hit 5 miles, I decided to just go one more!  This way I kind of made up for missing Tuesday.

Friday – Rest day!  I thought about running today to make up for Tuesday, but my leg was a little sore.   So, instead I foam rolled and massaged it.  I have found that a heating pad seems to really help it too.  I am starting to think it is a shin splint.  It only hurts when I am running, and not all the time.  The only thing I’m not sure about is that the pain is in the top of my ankle.  It’s totally different from the injury to my right leg.  That one hurt from the bottom of my foot to up in my shin, and it throbbed all the time. There were days that I couldn’t even walk on it.  So, hopefully this is just a sore muscle, or a shin splint.    

Saturday – I had 10 miles to run today.  I had to do it early in the morning because we were going hunting.  So, it was really cold outside.  I decided to run it on the treadmill since my leg had been so sore all week.  I ran 10 miles on the treadmill!  It was definitely more of a mental challenge than a physical challenge.  I had a good playlist, but I still got really bored.  If anyone has any advice for how to make the time pass on the treadmill please leave me a comment.  Any good audio book recommendations or podcast recommendations?

After running, we went hunting and I didn’t get a shot.  Then we went out for Mexican!

I was starving by the time we went!  Sometimes after a run, I am hungry all day.  On Thursday, I was like a bottomless pit.  But, after my run on Saturday, I wasn’t hungry at all.  I forced myself to eat a granola bar before we went hunting because I thought I would get hungry while we were there.  My stomach did growl a few times, but it quit and I just wasn’t that hungry.  But, by the time we got to the restaurant I was really hungry.  We started with chips and salsa and goat cheese dip.  It is so good!

Jeremy ordered the Pollo Loco dinner with chorizo sausage.

We shared both dinners.  This place has the best grilled chicken breast, and we get it every time we eat there.  I ate everything on my plate! 

After dinner we went to pick up a few groceries.

Then we watched Train Wreck.  It was pretty raunchy!  There were parts of it that were funny, but most of it was just dirty talk.

Sunday – Today is a cross train day.  I walked on the treadmill for 45 minutes.  I’m really excited I got my own treadmill….finally!

    I have no advice for passing time on the treadmill because I loathe the treadmill. I need to start my heat training to prepare for my March half in Florida. Ugh. And speedwork too. I will say that intervals do help the time pass.

    I hope your aches and pains go away fast!

      I’ll try some intervals next time! I’m thinking about getting a TV to put in front of it and see if that helps. I really don’t like the treadmill either but I will be using it when the weather gets cold!

    10 miles on the treadmill? You rock! I don’t think I ever ran over 7, but I’m not sure because it has been a long time. It really bothered my Achilles after I injured it, so I quit — gave it away — which I still regret a little bit. I know you will enjoy yours this winter as you continue training for your marathon. I hope your leg pain goes away! I have certain shoes that make my feet and ankles sore. When I’m training for something important, I tend to stick to the same old shoes. Not very fashionable, I’ll admit. I literally feel like I eat all the time. But, I’m starving. It’s embarrassing because anytime anyone walks in my office, I’m eating. LOL.     Great job adjusting your training to fit your schedule and taking time off when you felt you needed it. I don’t have any advice for the treadmill because I’m scared to death of treadmills…lol. I have a fear of picking up speed and falling off the back. Sounds crazy, but for me the fear is real. Kuddos to you though for getting your long run done on the treadmill.

      Lol I have actually thought about falling off the back a few times…so far that hasn’t happened though!

    I use the treadmill and the bike trainer a lot. I watch Netflix series or movies. I also like podcasts. Babbittville Radio is good. He focuses on triathlon but also has runners, cyclists, race directors, and coaches interviewed from time to time. It is quite interesting to hear how the elites in any sport train. Good luck with the marathon training and definitely don’t skip rest days if you have any kind of pain.

    Way to go getting 10 miles on the treadmill! I’m not much of a treadmill person either, but when I used to run at the gym, I would go to the movie room for long runs. So movies help. The pics of your mexican food is making me hungry! :p

      Mexican is my favorite! I think I could eat it everyday!! I’m thinking about getting a tv in front of the treadmill so a movie is a great idea. Thanks!!

    Great job with your training last week! Watching shows on Netflix helps me when I run on the treadmill. I’m glad I have a treadmill too. I used to hate it but I’ve grown to love it since it’s convenient when I can’t run outside with the kids home.

    Girl you are the bomb for running 10 on the mil! I swear it’s about all I can do to get in 4! I will say though while I run outside 98% of the time, Having my own treadmill would be so awesome! I have to go to my gym if the weather is a factor, so your are lucky you have one. You’ll figure it out, I’ve heard lots of people watch tv series off netflix or listen to podcasts. How do you like the Bombas socks? I do love them and have several pair!!!

      I LOVE the bombas socks!! They are the best socks I have ever had! I’m even wearing them when I’m not running. Lol
