My absolute favorite sport has to be baseball! Although, it hasn’t always been that. I grew up in a football town, and went to a football school with games every Friday night. My family is a football family. I was on the drill team in high school, and I loved being on the field under the bright lights and on the sidelines cheering on my team. Friday nights were my favorite time of the week! Football games were the place to be, and the whole town came out to watch. It was tradition, and still is! In college, every weekend was about Oklahoma University football games. If I wasn’t at the game, all my friends got together at someone’s house to eat and watch the game on TV. It was really fun to hang out with friends and cheer for a team. We still do this when we can, but it’s just not as often as it used to be. But, I’m not as into football anymore like I used to be. I like to get together with my friends, but I just can’t get into the games like I used to. I still like football, but not as much as I did.
Now, my favorite sport is baseball; which is very ironic, because I used to absolutely despise it! I never wanted to watch games, they bored me. I couldn’t stand to watch them on TV, and I had only ever been to high school baseball games, which I hated. I guess this is probably because football was the main sport at my school, and no one in my family really liked baseball that much.
This all changed when I met Jeremy. He was a diehard, loyal Yankees fan. He also had played baseball in high school and college, and he umpired baseball. So, I guess I really didn’t have much of choice because I was around it all the time. He wanted to watch it on TV, and we were always at games, and I still hated it. But, I eventually fell in love with the game and I can remember exactly when. Nine years ago, for Jeremy’s birthday I surprised him with tickets to watch the Yankees play at the Rangers. I bought tickets for all three games in the series. When I walked into that ballpark is when it all changed.
Being able to see the game in person and hear all the cheers, chants, music, and noise was just amazing! I started following the Yankees too, and eventually became more of a Yankee fan than my husband. I was keeping up with players and stats, and I loved it all! I would actually sit and watch games on TV. Plus, I even liked it that the seasons were long. My favorites were Mariano Rivera, Derek Jeter, Andy Pettitte, and Jorge Posada, the Core 4!
I do like Robinson Cano and A-Rod too. I really like Johnny Damon, and still do, even though he doesn’t play for the Yankees.
My absolute favorite of all of these is Mariano Rivera. I liked him because he was always so calm and he always has a smile on his face. He would have so much pressure on him to save a game, and he never let it show. I loved the way he winds up to pitch. Plus, I read his book, The Closer , and I respect how hard he worked to get to where he was.
For six or seven years in a row, we went to watch the Yankees every time they were playing the Rangers! It was so much fun, and I liked it that the core players were the same year after year.
When we would go to the games, we would get there hours early and wait in line outside the gates. When the gates would open, we would go running in to wait in line for autographs. I would go to the autographs line, and Jeremy would go to the outfield to try and catch balls. It was always so hot in Texas, and I would be drenched in sweat by the time the game started, but it was always worth it! I have gotten autographs from Jose Molina, Nick Swisher, Johnny Damon, Mariano Rivera.
I really don’t think I have ever been “star-struck” in my life. I have met a lot of famous singers, and have never been tongue tied or awkward before. But, when I met Mariano and Johnny Damon, that’s exactly how I felt.
When I got Johnny Damon’s autograph, I jumped over a seat and accidentally spilled a lady’s nachos and she was screaming at me! We offered to buy her more, but she didn’t want them. Honestly, I didn’t really care because I got Johnny Damon’s autograph, and a picture of him!
Another exciting thing that happened when we were at a game one year was a bad storm blew in. At first we all just had to go inside, but then a tornado came and they crammed us all underground in the tunnel. Everyone that was in the ballpark was squished in those tunnels! I don’t know how long we were down there, but it felt like forever! We ended up right outside the Yankees clubhouse, so we got to peek in at the players when the door would open. It was really exciting!
I look forward to baseball season now all year long. I love the Yankees because there is so much history with the franchise, and I love how classy they all seem. You don’t see Yankees cussing or showing up umpires. They are all clean cut and look nice. We have watched other teams where the players are mouthing fans, or cussing the umpires. Major league players are looked up to millions of kids, and it doesn’t set a good example when they are being disrespectful. Yes it stinks to lose, but there is a graceful way to handle it. I think the Yankees set a great example. This is one of the reasons why I love them so much!
Hopefully, someday soon we can go to Yankee Stadium to watch a game there.
